Made up of five learned academies - is probably best known for one of them: the Académie Française. The building itself was designed by Le Vau in 1663-4 and constructed using money bequeathed by Cardinal Mazarin. It occupies the site formerly of the Nêsle gate and tower - part of the medieval wall of Paris.
